Even if Mark Cook, a UW-Madison animal scientist, does nothing else remarkable in his research career, he will have made his mark on the world.

Cook will forever be remembered as the guy who came up with a way to rid the world of hairballs -- the cat kind.

Working over the last year with researchers from Nestle Purina PetCare Co., Cook spent more time than he cares to talk about studying hairballs, those pesky clumps of fur that cats cough up.

For several years Cook has worked with Nestle Purina on pet health issues and in every meeting he had, company officials complained about hairballs in cats.
