The operator of the Bridgeport-to-Port Jefferson, N.Y., ferry said it has the potential to double its current rider-ship if it can find a new location closer to the port entrance--a proposal the city's Port Authority claims doesn't hold water.

The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Co. commissioned a study by the research firm Tritec Marine Consultants/ Stena AB. It found that projected increases in ferry traffic cannot be supported by the existing Water Street terminal and recommends a new ferry terminal be built on the east side of the harbor closer to the port entrance.
