The dynamics of the Mississippi River within Southwest Pass cannot be underestimated. The crew of a Liberian vessel carrying coal, the Chemtrans Belocean, found this out the hard way on April 3, 1997, when they ran aground just south of the river's mouth in the Southwest Pass channel. It took six tugboats to set her free (see opening image), and the incident illustrated the importance of maintaining and accessing up-to-date data for navigating the waterways of the Mississippi.
