Article: Oil companies, area residents join in hazardous waste cleanup. (at the McColl hazardous waste dump, Fullerton, California)

LOS ANGELES -- A funny thing happened on the way to the cleanup of the McColl hazardous waste dump in Fullerton, Calif.

Area residents became frustrated with the slow progress that the Environmental Protection Agency was making on its plan to clean up the site, so they banded together with five oil companies to come up with a compromise.

Now the community is pressing EPA to accept the compromise instead of waiting for the agency to finalize its plan.

"We spent a year talking with the community until we found out what would make a palatable solution," said Bill Duchie of Shell Oil Co., who's serving as spokesman for the McColl site.
