Mortgage bank Northern Rock yesterday put itself on course to become the biggest private employer in Tyne and Wear after announcing plans to create 1,900 jobs in the next three years.
The company is ploughing pounds 30m into expanding its headquarters at Gosforth, in a move which will see 1,400 extra posts there.
It will also recruit an additional 500 workers on Wearside after buying new premises at its base at Doxford Business Park, in Sunderland.
Northern Rock has already created 1,600 jobs, most of them in the North-East, since it converted from a building society ...
