KEIZER - First impressions are big in the Valenzuela family.
Eugene first baseman Fernando Valenzuela Jr. had four hits, including a pair of home runs, in his professional debut Wednesday, more than two decades after his father had an impressive major-league debut.
"The biggest thing to get to the major leagues is to produce when you get an opportunity," said Valenzuela Jr., whose father won the Cy Young Award as a rookie for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. "Dad always talked about that and he threw a shutout in his first game in the majors. I hope this is the start of something."
