The Middle East has now displaced Asia as the world's number one arms buyer in the developing world, according to an annual government report released last week.
The report, called Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations, 1995-2002 is an annual publication put out by the Congressional Research Service. This year's report provides updated data on the previous year's publication, and significant among its findings is the determination that from 1999 to 2002, the Middle East's share of the developing world's arms imports rose to 42.2 percent of the total, or about $35.9 billion in current dollars.
