The Federal Communications Commission last week unanimously voted to move ahead with what amounts to be "the great experiment'' for spectrum reform, proposing to make the 2500-2690 MHz band a test bed for a mix of advanced wireless technologies on frequencies used by schools and churches that regulators say are underutilized.
The plan to reconfigure the 2500-2600 MHz band reflects the boldest effort to date by the FCC to take spectrum reforms-including regulatory flexibility, unlicensed wireless expansion and market-driven spectrum licensing-out of the lab and into the commercial arena.
