DEMS, GOP CLASH ON LICENSE BILL STATE AGENCIES WOULD HAVE TO GRANT PERMITS IF STAFFS DON'T RULE ON APPLICATIONS IN TIME.(LOCAL/WISCONSIN)

State agencies would be forced to grant business permits and license applications if their staffs didn't meet deadlines for ruling on them, under a bill the state Assembly approved Thursday.

Assembly Bill 486, passed 67-32, is part of a sweeping package of Republican proposals aimed at jump-starting the state's economy and creating jobs. Republicans contend state agencies take so long to approve routine applications that businesses don't want to come to Wisconsin, costing jobs.

"Employers are being treated like unwanted vermin in Wisconsin," said the bill's sponsor, Rep. Phil Montgomery, R-Ashwaubenon.
