Washington, Oct 5 (PTI) Indian origin Republican Bobby Jindal on Sunday came closer to the possible governorship of the southern American state of Louisiana after finishing first in the open primary far ahead of his nearest rival, becoming the first Indian-American in US history to reach thus far.

The 32-year-old Rhodes scholar, whose Indian descent was cited as a major disadvantage, polled 33 per cent votes, way ahead of Democrat Lieutenant Governor Kathleen B. Blanco, who won only 18 per cent.
