Liz Claiborne is in pursuit of performance athletics market. (introduction of women's athletic shoe line)

NEW YORK -- Liz Claiborne Inc.'s upcoming introduction of performance athletic footwear and the scheduled opening of a Liz Claiborne Shoe/Accessory store are part of an aggressive plan that could more than double its wholesale footwear business over the next two years, shoe division president Ian Wright said last week.

"Right now it's (the wholesale shoe business) 3 percent to 4 percent of the total," Wright said, referring to footwear's share of Claiborne's overall sales, which were roughly $1.7 billion last year. "Shoes (wholesale) should at some point be 10 percent of the business, within a couple of years."
