Oct. 5--LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla.--Even the steady, drip-dropping rain could not deter the elderly man from his picking that morning. One by one, Walter Coore gingerly grabbed a few berries, sliding off their drenched red skin to reveal a secret inside: coffee beans.
"This was an experiment here," he said, rotating a single bean between two fingertips. "I have been growing coffee in my country since I was a teenager," said Coore, who left his native Jamaica 35 years ago.
