If Howard Dean becomes president of the United States, he'll owe a debt of gratitude to a car dealer.
Don Beyer of Alexandria, Va., who sells Volvos, Land Rovers and Subarus in five northern Virginia locations, is the treasurer of Dean's national campaign. And Dean's success in collecting more cash than better-known rivals for the Democratic Party nomination is a big reason he has jumped from being a long shot to a front-runner.
In the third quarter alone, the Dean campaign took in about $15 million, or roughly three times as much as any of the other nine Democrats seeking the White House next year.
