Poland presses for VAT-free internet access throughout EU

Warsaw. October 7. INTERFAX-EUROPE - Poland gave its internet access problems an international flare and began pressing for a lifting of EU rules mandating standard VAT tax rates on internet access for the entire union.

Minister of Finance Andrzej Raczko moved for such a VAT exemption during an ECOFIN meeting in Luxembourg Tuesday, Poland's Finance Ministry informed.

Poland currently lays a preferential 7% VAT rate on internet access services, but would be forced by EU regulations to increase that to the country's standard level of 22% when Poland joins the community in May 2004. That ...
