Fifty years ago today this country lost one of its greatest singers at the cruelly-early age of 41.
Kathleen Ferrier's singing career had lasted barely a dozen years, but during that time the incomparable contralto, a Lancastrian lass who had started out as a 14-year-old telephonist, had conquered the world.
