As tourism seasons go, industry officials and hoteliers are probably wishing 2003 could have been San Diego's own version of an endless summer.

The region welcomed visitors in unprecedented numbers as they filled San Diego's hotel rooms. The figures were so high, in fact, that local officials were left scratching their heads trying to recall the last time hotels across the county were packed wall to wall from one end of summer to the other.

Beginning with the Fourth of July weekend, San Diego ranked No. 1 for hotel-room occupancy across the nation for six consecutive weeks. While no official records are kept on such statistics, it's a remarkable number. ...
