SPRINGFIELD - Hundreds of people sampled Latin American cuisine and danced to mariachi bands during a fiesta Saturday celebrating Mexican independence.
Event co-organizer Fidel Garcia said he was pleasantly surprised by the crowd of more than 500 for the first-time event.
"Our goal is to show that the Springfield Latino community is very large. We also want to show the importance of Mexican independ- ence."
While Mexico's independence day may not be as well known as Cinco de Mayo; it's still an important date, said Garcia, a mortgage broker and restaurateur in Springfield.
