ON A RAINY night a few Wednesdays ago, "This American Life" fans packed the Paramount Theatre to hear Ira Glass and several regular contributors talk about what they learned from television - for an episode of a radio series.

Mull that over for a moment.

The lucky few hundred who scored tickets to the sold-out show could have stayed at home that night, warm on their couches, watching TV instead of listening to a couple of popular writers talk about it.
