The term graphic organizer is often used to describe strategies that help students construct meaning from assigned readings. Graphic organizers highlight ideas and represent relationships among key concepts. Researchers examining the uses and benefits of graphic organizers in postsecondary reading comprehension (Katayama 1997; Robinson and Kiewra 1995; Robinson and Schraw 1994) have found that requiring students to graphically organize material presented in textbooks aids in student comprehension.
