John E. Bates of Scituate, a veteran, died unexpectedly at home Sunday. He was 72.
Born and raised in Scituate, he attended Scituate High School and Boston University.
Mr. Bates served in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.
He worked for United Parcel Service for 28 years and as a hand picker for the Irish Sea Mossing industry until his retirement in 1986.
An avid runner and bike rider, Mr. Bates was a member of the North River Atlantic Club and completed many marathons, including three Boston Marathons, competitive road races and triathlons. He rode his bike all over New England and completed a bike ride from Seattle to ...
