Agency was fooled into taking on bogus nurse: warning of need for stringent checks after woman is jailed over employment fraud.(news)

A FORMER nurse who gained work via an agency even though her registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) had lapsed has started a prison sentence.

Christine Norman pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent, to obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and was jailed for six months. She had obtained work through the Nurses Direct agency with various employers for four years.

In court John Hillen, prosecuting, said Ms Norman, 59, of Dover, had stolen the NMC PIN number of her friend, nurse Carol Todd, and used false references. It was believed the agency employed Ms Norman without having a face-to-face interview, Mr Hillen said.
