On July 11, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published two guidance documents on qualified health claims. The guidances, covering qualified health claim petition procedures and an evidence-based ranking system for scientific data, were developed pursuant to the December 2002 Consumer Health Information for Better Nutrition Initiative, which is intended to help consumers make sound dietary decisions based on "more and better information" about food.
FDA expects that the ability to seek qualified claims will encourage product manufacturers to compete based on the scientifically demonstrated health benefits of their products. Moreover, FDA, working ...
