Article: NEW JAPANESE ROBOT MAKES SOUNDS WITH OWN VOCAL CORDS.

TOKYO, Oct 10 Asia Pulse - A research team from Waseda University and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (TSE:9432) has developed a robot that vocalizes by passing air across vocal cords in the same manner as humans.

The vocal cords are made from rubber, as are the muscles around the mouth , but these organs are positioned and designed to move in the same way as comparable human organs.

The robot can vocalize in a range of around one octave. Eventually, the work will lead to the development of robots that can talk with the intonation and pitch appropriate for each occasion rather than using recorded sounds.
