Grand Cherokee needs update to stay competitive.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)

DENVER _ Jeep's Grand Cherokee, like an old friend, remains one of my favorite sport-utility vehicles.

With an emphasis on old, unfortunately.

On a recent trip to Colorado, I had a chance to drive the 2004 Overland version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I continue to like the vehicle's size, which isn't obnoxiously large nor uncomfortably small. That packaging, plus the responsive V-8 engine, make for a vehicle that handles fairly well, drives fairly smoothly and parks fairly easily. (And although I didn't take it off-road on this trip, Jeep's reputation for prowess when it comes to putting tires on dirt, grass and rocks remains top notch.)
