Not only was Gen. Robert E. Lee buried in a casket that had been retrieved from the Maury River at Lexington, the coffin was also so truncated that the hero of the Southland had to be placed in it without his shoes.
These somewhat bizarre sidelights are only two of many well-authenticated anecdotes concerning Lee's last days. So since he died 133 years ago today in the President's House at Washington College, now Washington and Lee University, I am going to devote today's column to several of these stories concerning the great Virginian who transformed defeat into victory by declaring:
