Every year the Boston Conservatory hosts a New Music Festival, as it will this week, with performances by faculty composers. But this year's festival wears a glossier luster because of the recent announcement that composer and faculty member Osvaldo Golijov has been awarded a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant.
The news came last week. "We had just come back from Home Depot," the 42-year-old Newton resident said. "We went for the cheapest cabinets we could find, because our kitchen was falling apart. Then the phone rang."
Suddenly it didn't matter how much the kitchen cabinets cost. The grant provides Golijov with $500,000, no strings ...
