JAMESTOWN, Va. -- It will take three years and cost about $11 million to restore historic Jamestown settlement artifacts damaged during Hurricane Isabel.

And historians say the destruction could have been avoided.

The collection, estimated to contain nearly 900,000 items of archaeological artifacts, photographs, papers and other items, has been moved to Fort Lee near Petersburg for restoration.

Karen Rehm, chief historian for Colonial National Historical Park, said the collection's caretakers, who work in the division she leads, relied on their experiences during previous hurricanes to secure the basement ...
