The state of New Hampshire has filed a lawsuit against 22 petroleum and chemical companies for adding the chemical MTBE to gasoline, causing widespread contamination of the state's waters.
Attorney General Peter W. Heed said the state wants the companies held responsible for all costs associated with investigating contaminated sites, pinpointing sources and cleaning up the contamination.
The state - in its lawsuit filed in Merrimack County Superior Court - claims the manufacturers and refiners produced a defective product, created a public nuisance and violated state environmental and consumer protection laws.
