A CHILLI skin patch can combat pain caused by neuralgia and arthritis.
The patch, which contains capsaicin - the pungent, active ingredient in red-hot chilli peppers - has been successful in trials. When it is put on to the skin, it produces a feeling of heat. It is thought that it works to quell pain levels by keeping nerve cell receptors in the skin occupied.
They are so busy coping with the burning sensation caused by the patch, they ignore the other pain. This approach is similar to vigorously rubbing an elbow or a knee to relieve the pain of a knock.
