The world on your dinner plate; as British palates become increasingly adventurous, speciality rice manufacturers are looking further afield for inspiration.(Rice And Noodles)

Speciality rices are showing a distinctly mixed performance despite the huge variety now on offer.

Thai fragrant rices, for example, showed a 2.1% value drop and 9.7% volume drop last year (IRI) despite the overall strong performance of Thai cuisine, while other speciality rices also fell: down 6.2% in value and 4% in volume.

"Speciality rices are starting to run out of steam after quite significant increases in recent years," says Tony O'Connor, sales and marketing director of Veetee. "I think it's because the whole microwaveable thing has happened."
