This paper describes the results of a study into the use of chest X-ray after central venous catheter (CVC) insertion as a routine procedure. The authors argue that chest radiology is not fully justified and that the clinical assessment skills of the operator assist early detection of complications.
In this prospective study, data from 149 patients' catheter placements were analyzed. The indications for CVC insertion included the delivery of chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, the impossibility of peripheral venous access and central venous pressure measurement.
