Dogs have always helped humans. It's part of who they are and always have been. And the gift of themselves that working dogs offer us gives them a full life in return: They are accomplished, appreciated, proud.
One person who embraces the notion of working dogs is Carla Spawnvan Berkum. As a child, van Berkum repeatedly read Follow My Leader, James Garfield's 1957 account of a blind boy and his guide dog. Decades later, when she took a tour of the facilities of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, in Smithtown, N.Y. (see "Second Sight," right), she knew she would welcome the challenge of raising a guide dog puppy.
