A SALE by Sotheby's on 12 December offers an opportunity to buy a piece of architectural history. The Farnsworth House, in Illinois, designed by Modern Movement master Mies van der Rohe, is being auctioned by British millionaire Lord Palumbo, writes Sebastian Margolf.
In 1972, as plain property developer Peter Palumbo, he bought the house, a 1951 single-storey glass-and-concrete box near Chicago, and began a 30-year restoration programme.
The house was recently opened to the public and Lord Palumbo had hoped Chicago's city council would take it over as a permanent visitor attraction.
