HOUSTON -- Alaska has halted coalbed methane leasing and will not approve any new developments, pending formulation of regulations to mitigate the environmental impact of coalbed methane drilling.

Pat Galvin, the coalbed methane coordinator at the Alaska Division of Oil and Gas, said the state expects to issue the regulations early next year.

"We will not issue any additional leases or approve any major coalbed methane developments until we have completed that process," Galvin told Oil Daily.
