Oct. 14--Price-savvy consumers who shop by catalog or the Internet to avoid sales taxes may soon have to start paying up.
Some state governments and brick-and-mortar merchants are pushing Congress to enact a law that would force "remote retailers" -- such as online, catalog and mail-order businesses -- to collect sales taxes on all customer orders.
Until now, complicated tax laws have made it difficult and burdensome for catalog and Internet retailers to collect such taxes from their customers. In 1992, Congress declared that catalog and online merchants had to charge sales ...
