Effect on IBM staff reductions on local operations is unclear
ARMONK, N.Y., -- IBM's plan to reduce the number of global employees by 10,000 this year -- which will result in a $2.3 billion charge to finance employee retirement benefits -- will affect the company's Westchester operations, but it is not yet known to what degree.
Officials at International Business Machines Corp. said no layoffs are contemplated at this time.
The company hopes to achieve its goals through voluntary resignation incentives, early retirement and attrition.
IBM re-emphasized that the employee cuts are worldwide and not aimed at one particular area.
