HBO Beats Broadcast Nets on Saturdays

Home Box Office boasted last week that it defeated each of the three broadcast networks on Saturday nights in its universe, but broadcast network research executives said that overall, HBO and the other pay networks showed no ratings growth.

HBO said that for the 1990-91 season, it earned an 11.3 rating/18 share, a 14 percent increase over the previous year, in primetime on Saturdays, according to Nielsen Media Research figures.

The pay service said its ratings beat NBC's 10.9/18, CBS' 7.2/12 and ABC's 7.0/11. NBC was down 20 percent, ABC was off 3 percent and CBS was up 13 percent from the 1989-90 season, HBO said.
