THIS IS the lunch that dare not speak its name. A practice whose origins lie in Man's stone-age past; once a way of life and even a matter of survival, but in more modern times a taboo that makes civilised men shudder.

Cannibalism, the eating of human flesh, is a subject shrouded in mystery, myth, illinformed speculation and, of late, political correctness.

This week it was revealed that Ratu Filimoni Wawabalavu, a Fijian chief, is to hold a ceremony next month to atone for the murder - and consumption - of an unfortunate British missionary 136 years ago.
