Q. Can I begin to grow a pine tree indoors from seed? What is the best way to extract the seed from the cone, conditions for growth, etc.?
A. The good news is that it can be done; the bad news is that it isn't as easy as you might think. The first thing to do is to make sure you have a pine and not a spruce or a fir tree. The big clue here is that pines bear their needles in bundles called fascicles, whereas spruce and fir bear their needles singly.
Once you're sure you have a pine, you need to know what species of pine you have, because different species require different conditions to germinate.
