Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" is based on the play "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexander Dumas (the son), who based the play on his novel of the same name.
The story tells the sad fate of a Parisian courtesan who suffers from tuberculosis and finds true love too late to enjoy it before her untimely death while still young. The play was popular in Paris, where Verdi saw it, and although the novel has fallen into obscurity, the play is still sometimes performed.
The movie "Camille," starring Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor, is a film version.
