In what would be a significant extension of its community services, the Cleveland Clinic is considering building a full-scale emergency room.
The Clinic's chief executive officer, Dr. Floyd Loop, last week told Crain's the existing emergency area, on East 90th Street between Euclid and Carnegie avenues, is undersized and doesn't adequately serve the needs of the Clinic or the community. Critics over the years have charged that the Clinic enjoys an advantage over other hospitals which treat more poor patients and so must absorb higher costs for indigent care.
