When Paul Wellstone decided to run for the U.S. Senate, Northfield bakery owner Ed Klinkhammer was the first to hear about it.
"Mike Casper and Paul were in the coffee shop having coffee and a discussion," Klinkhammer said. As Klinkhammer walked past their table, Wellstone reached out. "He said, `You're the first to know. I decided to run for Senate."'
That Wellstone told the first person he saw was typical, Klinkhammer said. "He was just a friendly guy."
