Under a barrage of Democratic amendments, Republicans on the Legislature's budget committee Tuesday carved out a series of narrow exemptions to a bill allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons for the first time in 130 years.

While the changes address the fears of some that lifting the ban would lead to greater gun violence, they don't go far enough, opponents said.

"It's an embarrassment for them to be pushing for such an irresponsible bill," said Sen. Gwendolynne Moore, D-Milwaukee, who proposed dozens of amendments to the measure.
