This excellent book is a volume in a World Cities geography series, edited by R.J. Johnston and Paul Knox. Montreal is the first (and thus far the only) Canadian city to appear in this series. As the authors point out, the choice of Montreal as a "world city" stems more from its cultural than its economic or political dimensions (p. 11). The authors are professors at INRS-Urbanisation. They are positioned perfectly for writing this book for several reasons. They have different disciplinary perspectives-Rose is an anglophone geographer, Germain is a francophone sociologist.
