Each year, the United States and Japan conduct a simulated training exercise in Japan. The exercise, known as Yama Sakura, is designed to improve the working relationship of the U.S. and Japanese military organizations. The Yama Sakura Command Post Exercise 43 (YS43) was held last January and February at Camp Higashi-Chitose on Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four major islands.
