Can we be scared to death?
Absolutely, says Dr. Redford Williams, director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Duke University School of Medicine, who has studied the effect of extreme stress on the body.
As an example, William points to the findings of autopsies conducted on pilots whose jets crashed. In some cases, tests showed the hearts stopped beating before the planes hit the ground.
