Article: A way to make [H.sub.2] and [O.sub.2] from water without electrolysis.(Chementator)

Oharai Research Establishment of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI; Oharai, Japan; jaeri.go.jp) claims to be the first group to continuously produce hydrogen and oxygen by the so-called IS process, a non-electrochemical method to split water using iodine and sulfur dioxide. First proposed by General Atomics (San Diego, Calif.), the IS process follows a three-step mechanism, resulting in the net reaction: [H.sub.2]O [right arrow] [H.sub.2] + 1/2[0.sub.2]. Until now, only the individual steps of the non-electrochemical mechanism have been performed, says JAERI.
