Oct. 27--In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 tragedy, it looked as if good fortune had smiled down on SeaTac-based Alaska Airlines and its employees.

The company dodged the massive layoffs that its competitors used to cope with declining traffic, maintained its schedule of pay increases for union workers and even expanded routes.

But early last summer, the company, after taking a long look at its finances and its competitive position in the industry, asked its employees to provide it with $112 million in annual savings.
