As the leaders of the world's seven major industrial and wealthiest countries prepare to meet with Gorbachev in London, they tend to see themselves as the Society of St. George, which has slain the Communist dragon. They interpret Boris Yelsin's win in the Russian election (and the vote to rename Leningrad) as yet another victory for allegedly immaculate political pluralism and free market capitalism, and in exchange for further Soviet confessions of past sins and persistent errors they are magnanimously prepared to grant forgiveness in the form of heavily conditioned financial aid and technical assistance.
