Ear tube placement surgery is to the children of today what tonsillectomy was to the children of the 1950s. Surgical insertion of tubes in the eardrum, tympanostomy, is performed annually on more than a million U.S. children to relieve swelling or infection of the middle ear. Otitis media, the medical term for ear infection, has become the No. 1 reason for bringing a child to the doctor. Its incidence has risen dramatically in the last ten years.
